Bluebell in Dogkennel Wood

The Ospreys are back!

On Thursday afternoon, 10th April, the birds arrived on Bassenthwaite Lake simultaneously after their 3,000 mile journey from Africa.

In a surprising development this year, the pair have shunned the nest used in previous seasons, and have begun to built their new nest on our (eastern) side of the lake, making it more likely than ever that the birds will be seen flying over the hotel on their way to Overwater Tarn. Latest reports suggest that three eggs have now been laid.

The viewing area at Dodd Wood is still in operation - and, because the birds are nesting nearer, they might even be easier to view.

The birds that have arrived back this year are thought to be the male that first nested here in 2001 and the female that he paired up with last year after his former partner failed to return in 2007.

For regular updates, visit www.ospreywatch.co.uk, ......or, for the real thing, pay us a visit between now and August when the birds will return to Africa.

New Room Numbers

We have renumbered our bedrooms from one to ten ( plus the Garden Room ). For those of you who regularly book the same room, this may create some confusion initially, and for this we apologise.

Rooms One to Four remain the same as before. Room 6 becomes Room Five, Turret room 7 becomes Room Six, Room 9 becomes Room Seven, Room 14 changes to Room Eight, Room 15 is now Room Nine and Room 17 is Room Ten.

We thank you for bearing with us, and hopefully we will all soon get used to the change!

Skiddaw Bitter

We are very pleased to announce that we now serve real ale in our bar.

Skiddaw Bitter (3.6%), brewed at nearby Hesket Newmarket Brewery, is a light refreshing quaffer, and is proving very popular.

The Rhododendron Walk

Adrian inspecting one of the 40 new rhododendrons that he planted last year along the final section of the circular hotel walk. These are all very fine specimens, of various varieties, and should ensure an interesting and colourful end to spring.
