Local Attractions

The Lake District has always drawn people for holidays - its lakes, hills and mountains appealing to walkers and climbers; its rich heritage of interest to many, from its stately homes and castles to Roman forts and prehistoric stone circles; and its beauty an inspiration to all.

Here in the North Lakes, we pride ourselves on retaining that unspoiled feel, so special to anyone living in a town or city. Here, you can walk for hours without seeing another soul, and if you're caught in a traffic jam then you can be sure that there is a slow-moving tractor up ahead!

Squirrel

Our own grounds offer a host of opportunities for watching the local wildlife, with our resident red squirrels being the top attraction!

Deer and rabbits are amongst our less unusual regular visitors, and top of the list for unusual birds are the Greater Spotted Woodpeckers who feed regularly in full view of the hotel.

Flying overhead you may see one of the Ospreys which are now breeding beside Bassenthwaite Lake, on its way to catch a fish in Overwater Tarn.

Or visit the official Osprey viewpoint at Dodd Wood, just 3 miles from here.

Bring Your Clubs?

Cumbria has its fair share of golf courses. Some are worth playing for the scenery alone, and some offer very very fine golf.

If you are considering a golfing break, you will find Overwater centrally placed for the following courses:

  • Keswick
  • Penrith
  • Silloth on Solway
  • Carlisle
  • The Eden Course
  • Embleton
  • Maryport
  • Workington
  • Brampton

Silloth on Solway

We will be pleased to give you advice and information about the various courses and we will of course book tee times on your behalf.

Further afield, a rare breeds park, an ostrich farm and even a wild animal park in the South Lakes are all easily accessible from here by road.

For those wishing to shop, nearby Keswick offers a good choice of independent shops, including a specialist chocolatier, art galleries, gift shops and a myriad of walking and outdoor pursuits shops. The market is well-supported every Saturday.

Mirehouse
Historic Mirehouse and Gardens

Perhaps you look for a bit of culture while you are away? If so, you might choose to visit Wordsworth House in Cockermouth, Mirehouse on the way to Keswick, Dalemain or Hutton in the Forest towards Penrith, or the brand new Theatre by the Lake in Keswick.

Children are well catered for in the area, too. Trotters Animal Farm is just down the road from here, and there is a super leisure pool in Keswick. A visit to the Beatrix Potter exhibition in Windermere brings all her best-loved characters to life. Or try Rookin House Farm for a great adventure day on quad bikes, horse-back , even a ride in a field gun carrier!
